STRAD CALENDAR, 2025, CANADA COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS

Item Code 3343

Established in 1957, the Canada Council is Canada's public arts funder, with a mandate to foster and promote the enjoyment of the arts and help produce artistic work. One of its flagship projects is its 'Musical Instrument Bank' (MIB), which loans out priceless instruments to deserving musicians for a three-year term. The MIB was conceived in 1975 (50 years ago next year) and actually founded in 1985 (40 years ago).
Recent beneficiaries of the MIB include violinist Timothy Chooi (winner of the 2018 Joachim Competition in Hannover); Blake Pouliot (first album nominated for a Juno Award) and cellist Leland Ko (who came third in the 2024 Windsor Competition).

The Strad
has been cultivating a good relationship with the Canada Council and the MIB for a while now; in the July 2023 issue we featured one of their latest acquisitions, a c.1804 violin by Georges Chanot I, in the In Focus section.
