For such things as fitting bridge feet, many luthiers grind this type of tool out of old files
or other reclaimed steels out of necessity. While this can work in a pinch, those reclaimed
steels do not have the optimum performance that a professional needs. With field tests and
input from violin makers, Thorsson created a professional, purpose-made version of this
gouge. This tool features a slightly convex edge of high grade Yasuki White Paper steel
that is brine quenched and heat treated for best possible performance at the bench.
